FEMA gives tips on how to spend disaster funds

As FEMA money begins to make its way to Arkansans affected by the March 14-15 tornadoes, it is important to keep track of money spent and ensure the money is used for the specified reason stated in the approval letter.

Needs which FEMA may approve funds for include: Home repairs, rental assistance for temporary living, repair or replacement of a damaged primary vehicle, uninsured out of pocket medical expenses for an injury caused by the disaster, increased childcare expenses, repair of replacement of specialized occupation tools, essential education materials such as computers, schoolbooks and supplies, or moving and storage expenses.

FEMA strongly urges recipients to only use grant money for specified needs. For example, home repair money may be used in ways to help make a home safe, sanitary and functional, but should not be used for regular living expenses such as utilities, food, medical or dental bills.

Travel, entertainment or any non-distaster caused expenses are never an appropriate use of FEMA funds. If grant money is not used as outlined in the FEMA eligibility letter, a recipient may be asked to repay their grants and could lose eligibility for further federal assistance.
