Video: Burglary suspect leads deputies on chase from Bay Point to Walnut Creek

(KRON) — A burglary suspect led authorities on a chase across multiple East Bay highways on May 15, after a Contra Costa County Sheriff’s office helicopter alerted deputies to the suspect’s location.

The helicopter unit initially responded to the report of a burglary on Evora Road in Bay Point. The suspect’s vehicle, identified as a white work van, was allegedly seen fleeing the scene of the crime and authorities attempted to stop the van on the southbound side of Highway 242.

“The suspect van failed to yield, leading deputies on a pursuit which went westbound on Highway 24,” the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office said.

The chase passed Mount Diablo Boulevard, where the suspect turned into the opposite direction of traffic and drove down an on-ramp. Deputies stopped the pursuit and allowed the helicopter to follow the van.

“The suspect abandoned the vehicle in Walnut Creek, and with the assistance of [the Walnut Creek Police Department], a perimeter was established,” CCSO said. “The suspect was later taken into custody without incident.”

The suspect in the chase was identified as 52-year-old David Barnett of Fremont. Barnett was booked into the Martinez Detention Facility for burglary, grand theft and petty theft charges. Barnett also had several outstanding felony arrest warrants, and is being held on $462,500 bail.
