Brent Weisberg with the Salt Lake City Police Department announced in a press conference that the victim was “a very young child,” and the victim died in the hospital a few minutes before he began speaking.
At this point in the investigation, police are not releasing the exact age of the child.
According to police, CPR was already being performed when officers arrived on scene, and Salt Lake City firefighters and Gold Cross Ambulance continued providing medical care.
The driver was operating an SUV in a driveway when he hit the child, and officers believe that this was a low-speed crash. The driver is related to the child, and he remained at the scene and is cooperating with officers.
Wilson Avenue continues to be closed between 300 East and 400 East, and police say it is expected to remain closed for several hours while detectives process the scene.
Weisberg said that this is shaping up to be a horrible accident, with no foul play suspected.
Police reported that SLCPD social workers responded to the scene to assist those impacted by the incident, and a SLCPD chaplain also responded to the hospital to support the family.
