ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – If you visit Carver Park right now, you would be met with cranes and steel beams, as construction crews work to build a new recreation center.

Voters approved the construction of the G.V. Daniels Recreation Center during a 2023 bond election, costing $28 million. It was narrowly passed, with 51% in favor and 49% against the new facility.

In June 2024, the city began exploring logistics for demolitions and rebuilds. Officials proposed simultaneous demolition, which could lower reconstruction costs by about 5%. City officials moved ahead with that plan, demolishing the old structures in December 2024.

This center is one of two approved by the bond. Construction of the Cesar Chavez Recreation Center is also underway.

The recreation centers will include a game room, classrooms, a library, and a new indoor gym. A fitness room and a three-lane running track will also be added around the gym.
