Gov. Jeff Landry to sign tort reform bills passed by Louisiana lawmakers

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Gov. Jeff Landry is set to sign tort reform bills passed by Louisiana lawmakers in the regular legislative session.

Landry has called for major reforms to address the state insurance crisis and suggested a “balanced approach.” In an April 9 speech, he criticized insurance companies and trial lawyers, saying they aided the rise in car and homeowners insurance rates while insurers profited.

Measures proposed by the governor included banning insurance companies from passing advertising costs to consumers, taking steps to reduce “frivolous” lawsuits, limiting uninsured drivers’ access to insurance claims and expanding the insurance commissioner’s powers.

“A good meeting with State Farm executives today. Working together we are committed to solving the insurance crisis plaguing so many in our State!” Landry wrote on X Tuesday, May 27.
