Beloit native killed in UW-Platteville shooting has memorial service announced

BELOIT, Wis. (WTVO) — Funeral and visitation plans have been announced for the victim of a fatal shooting in a UW-Platteville dorm room.

The remembrance for Kelsie Martin, 22, will be held on Friday, May 30, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Daley Murphy funeral home on Cranston Road in Beloit.

On May 19, police responded to reports of gunshots coming from the Wilgus Residence Hall.

According to autopsy reports, 22-year-old Baraboo native Hallie Helms died due to self-inflicted gunshot wounds at around 4 p.m., inside a dorm room.

Martin was also found suffering from gunshot wounds in the dorm room and was immediately flown to UW Hospital by Med-Flight.

Martin was pronounced dead at the hospital.

One witness reported hearing arguing in the room at around 3:20 p.m., followed by a “loud bang” and what sounded like a heavy object hitting the floor. Other students reported hearing two gunshots.

Martin graduated that week with a degree in psychology. Helms earned a degree in elementary education.
