New report details ‘overreach’ of state government during pandemic

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Louisiana lawmakers spent part of Thursday learning about how the state responded to the COVID-19 pandemic.

State and health officials responded to the pandemic with health initiatives and measures to prevent the spread. The state experienced school and business closures, stay-at-home orders, mask mandates, and other restrictions.

“I really believe it’s important for us as a society going forward to confront our successes and our shortcomings and try to be prepared for the next time something like this happens,” said Rep. Charles Owen (R-Rosepine).

The report he presented to the Select Committee on Homeland Security at the Capitol on Wednesday lists the many state responses in detail and indicates that, as a result, individual rights were violated. It lists the many responses in detail and indicates individual rights were disregarded by former Gov. John Bel Edwards’ administration.

“It addressed our inaction as legislators for not stopping it when we could have, and the previous administration’s overreach and its infringement on liberty as opposed to its fascination with protection over liberty,” Owen told committee members.

Owens’ report explores the impact of the state’s response on hospitals, schools, businesses, and individuals, and lists recommendations. The report will soon be posted online for the public to read on Louisiana’s legislative website.
