The Laurel County Fire Department (LCFD) announced on Saturday that Major Roger Leslie Leatherman died from injuries sustained while he was responding to the tornado in Laurel County.
Leatherman had reportedly served his community for 39 years, fire officials wrote.
“As we continue search and recovery efforts in the affected areas, we ask that everyone stays clear to allow our teams to do their work safely and effectively,” LCFD leaders said. “This is a heartbreaking reminder of the dangers our first responders face every day and the incredible bravery they show in the face of disaster.”
Officials with the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office announced around 3 a.m. on Saturday that a warming, first aid, and food station has been set up at First Baptist Church at 804 West 5th Street in London. Shelter organizers need tarps and volunteers to help those who were displaced by the storms.
