Southbound Highway 17 near Idylwild Road was shut down just after 9 a.m. when a charter bus caught fire, officials said. According to CHP, the bus became “fully engulfed” in flames after 32 children and five adults were able to safely get out. No one was injured in the incident.
“Thanks to the quick actions of the driver and chaperones, all passengers were safely evacuated before firefighters arrived,” the Santa Clara County Fire Department said.
A second bus later arrived to transport the passengers away.
A single lane of southbound Highway 17 was reopened at 9:56 a.m. Firefighters remain at the scene to monitor any flareups, fire officials said.
Authorities are advising motorists to avoid the area if possible and expect delays. There is no estimated time to fully reopen the roadway.
