Ciceli McLin, the community care coordinator for the Winnebago County Coroner’s Office, said overdose deaths have also declined in the county.
“In 2023, we had a total of 117 deaths in 2024 where we had 64. So when we look at the numbers, we see a decline, which is a good thing, which does mean that we are in line with what the CDC expressed the other day and that opioid overdoses are on the downfall,” she said.
The CDC data shows a 27% decline in overdose deaths nationwide in 2024 compared to 2023. McLin said that trend is also true locally.
Gary Halbach, CEO of Remedies Renewing Lives, which works with substance abusers, said overdose deaths are on the decline because more abusers are choosing to get help.
“I look at the numbers here at Remedies. We have approximately 20% increase in people who are involved. Substance abuse services, primarily methadone, than a year ago,” said Halbach.
Halbach also said he believes drug usage itself is not rising.
“I don’t think the addiction numbers have gone up. I think it’s just that people are reaching out for help more. I see it as a good thing because what I see bringing down the overdoses and deaths is that more people are getting help. And that’s really what we’re all about,” he said.
