West Virginia leads nation in reducing overdose deaths

PRINCETON, W.Va. (WTRF) — West Virginia has recorded the largest decline in overdose deaths nationwide, according to newly released data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The state led the country in overdose death reduction for the past two months, reporting a nearly 41% year-over-year decrease. Governor Patrick Morrisey attributed the milestone to a comprehensive, multi-agency strategy aimed at combating drug addiction.

“West Virginia is setting the standard for successfully battling addiction and saving lives,” said Governor Morrisey. “Our nation-leading reduction in overdose deaths is the result of a holistic approach to tackle drug use and abuse. We will continue to work hard together to prevent further senseless death in West Virginia.”

A key component of the state’s long-term strategy is the West Virginia First Foundation, an organization established following opioid litigation settlements secured during Morrisey’s tenure as Attorney General.

The Foundation is responsible for managing and distributing those funds to support prevention, treatment, and law enforcement initiatives across the state.

The latest data reflects significant reductions in drug-related fatalities:

  • Opioid-related deaths have dropped nearly 69%
  • Fentanyl-related deaths have declined by more than 71%
  • Meth-related deaths are down 64%
  • Cocaine-related deaths have reached their lowest level in nearly a decade

These numbers reflect a pivotal shift in West Virginia’s response to the overdose crisis,” said Alex Mayer, Cabinet Secretary of the West Virginia Department of Human Services. “A 41% reduction in overdose deaths over the past year is more than a statistic; it represents hundreds of lives saved and real progress in communities across the state. This outcome underscores the effectiveness of our comprehensive approach and the dedication of partners across prevention, treatment, and recovery.”

State officials say they will continue building on this momentum to further reduce substance use and overdose deaths across West Virginia.
