May in the Big Country: Heat rising, rain falling

ABILENE, Texas (KTAB/KRBC) – As we reach the midpoint of May, it’s a good time to look back at the temperatures we’ve felt and the rain we’ve measured. From hot afternoons to surprise showers, here’s how the month is shaping up weather-wise.

So far, temperatures have been running about 5.4 degrees below average, with highs most recently climbing into the upper 90s. I would not be surprised if our below-average quickly turns into above-average in the upcoming weeks.

Rain gauges across the Abilene area have collected 1.38 inches of rainfall so far. This is considered on track since our monthly average for May is 3.37 inches. Unfortunately, I do not suspect we will make a new record this month, as the most rainfall we have ever seen for the month of May occurred in 1957, with 13.19 inches.

What’s next? Looking ahead, models suggest that next week will remain hot, with temperatures holding in the 90s. In addition, there is a slight chance we could see some showers come this weekend into next week; however, I do not expect these systems to go severe at this time.
