IDOT: Outbound Kennedy Expressway ramp closures rescheduled, will begin Wednesday, May 21

CHICAGO — Ramp closures on the outbound Kennedy Expressway, from the Edens Expressway to the Ohio Street junction, are now scheduled to take place starting Wednesday, May 21, weather permitting, the Illinois Department of Transportation announced Wednesday.

The closures, part of the ongoing Kennedy Expressway rehabilitation project, were previously scheduled to start on Monday, May 19.

According to IDOT, the following ramps are scheduled to close:

WEDNESDAY, MAY 21:

  • Ogden Avenue to outbound Kennedy, anticipated to reopen in approximately one week.
  • Outbound Kennedy to Division Street, anticipated to reopen in approximately one week.

MONDAY, MAY 26:

  • Outbound Kennedy to Ohio St., anticipated to reopen in approximately one week.

WEDNESDAY, MAY 28:

  • Keeler Avenue to outbound Kennedy, anticipated to reopen in approximately two weeks.

IDOT urges motorists to follow the posted detours.

As a reminder, the reversible express lanes on the Kennedy will remain open in the outbound direction, with two mainline outbound lanes closed at a time. During the first stage, the reversible-lane drivers going to I-90 or O’Hare International Airport from downtown Chicago must stay on the mainline Kennedy and not the express lanes.

This configuration is expected to remain in place until mid-July, according to IDOT.
