School system in Louisiana investigating video of teacher allegedly slapping student

LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) — A video that seems to show a teacher slapping a student at a Lafayette school is under investigation, officials said.

The video, which has gone viral on social media over the weekend, allegedly shows a teacher at Edgar Martin Middle School standing over a seated student and slapping them.

KLFY has not yet received permission to post the video.

A spokesperson for the Lafayette Parish School System said the administration is aware of the video.

“Lafayette Parish School System (LPSS) is actively investigating the incident,” the spokesperson said. “As this is an ongoing investigation, we are unable to provide further comment at this time.”

Officials said the incident took place about a year ago, but the video was first brought to the district’s attention recently. One LPSS employee shown in the video resigned this morning.

LPSS Superintendent Francis Touchet Jr. said the district “will take any necessary action based on the evidence following a prompt and thorough investigation.”
