According to a press release from the Greenwood Fire Department, emergency personnel responded to a reported aircraft crash at Indy South Greenwood Airport — which is located at 897 Airport Parkway — around noon.
Per GFD, initial reports on the incident indicate a white single-propeller aircraft was taking off in a northbound direction from one of the airport’s runways before the crash. Shortly after taking off, the plane crash-landed near Indiana State Police’s hangar at the airport.
According to GFD, two occupants — a male and female — exited the aircraft with minor injuries after the crash. Medics transported the plane’s occupants to a local trauma center for further evaluation.
GFD indicated that the White River Township Fire Department and Greenwood Police Department responded to the scene to provide assistance. Police also helped secure the scene as first responders waited for personnel with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to arrive.
GFD indicated that the NTSB and FAA will lead the investigation of the crash when their personnel arrive at the scene.
As of 2:48 p.m. Sunday, the Indy South Greenwood Airport’s office was open. Air traffic in and out of the airport, however, was suspended as a safety precaution.
