New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr retires from NFL

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — The New Orleans Saints will have a new starting quarterback after Derek Carr’s unexpected retirement this season.

The team announced the news Saturday morning in a press release.

According to the team, Carr experienced pain in his right shoulder while ramping up his preparation for the 2025 season. Medical scans later determined that Carr sustained a labral tear and also had significant degenerative changes to his rotator cuff.

The Saints said surgery was an option, but there was no guarantee it would be successful. After consulting with his wife, Carr decided to retire from football.

“Upon reflection of prayer, and in discussion with Heather, I’ve decided to retire from the National Football League,” said Carr. “For more than 11 years, we have been incredibly blessed, and we are forever grateful and humbled by this experience. It’s difficult to find the right words to express our thanks to all the teammates, coaches, management, ownership, team officials and especially the fans who made this journey so special. Your unwavering support has meant the world to us,” said Carr.

Carr signed a four-year, $150 million contract with the Saints in 2023.
