BC OEM reminds public of free emergency notification system

Baxter County residents may be unaware that a notification system has been in place since 2018 that can send alerts of severe weather, important announcements, and events in the Twin Lakes Area.

The system, called Nixle, is a free public notification platform used by the county’’s Office of Emergency Management (OEM) to quickly distribute essential information. Alerts can be received by text message, email, landline call, or a combination of the three, depending on user preference.

OEM Director David Stults tells KTLO News that Nixle is connected directly to the National Weather Service.

Besides weather alerts the system also keeps users informed of other events.

Signing up is simple. Residents can visit the Baxter County website and navigate to the OEM and 911 tab, or text their ZIP code to 888777 to begin receiving alerts within seconds. The system is completely free and includes links to detailed information within each alert.

Stults says that Nixle provides a more targeted and informative approach meant to support other alert systems like the county wide siren systems. Alerts can include forecasts, storm paths, and other real-time data to help residents make safer decisions.
