Taco’bout Marshall celebrates Cinco de Mayo with family fun

MARSHALL, Texas (KTAL/KMSS) — The City of Marshall is trying to add more events to the calendar to increase tourism and help local businesses. Taco’bout Marshall is one of the newest and most successful.

A take on the Taco Wars concept, Taco’bout Marshall took over downtown for the third time. Taco trucks lined North Washington Street, serving tacos, desserts, and drinks. Patrons could vote for their favorites by buying tickets.

Taco’bout Marshall wasn’t just about food and drinks, though. The event featured a DJ, mechanical bull, chicken and cow dropping bingo, and bubbles for the kids. The event felt like others that Marshall does so well. The Wonderland of Lights, Fireant Festival, Stagecoach Days, all Marshall events that successfully brought family fun to downtown. Taco’bout Marshall follows that tradition while adding its own flair of honoring Mexican culture for Cinco de Mayo.

Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Battle of Puebla, a victory for the Mexican army over French forces on May 5, 1862. Often mistaken as Mexican Independence Day, the battle took place more than 50 years after Mexico won independence from Spanish rule. Cinco de Mayo is important in Mexico, especially in Puebla, but after the battle, the French went on to recapture Puebla and later, Mexico City. In America, Cinco de Mayo is used as a day to honor Mexican culture as a whole and is largely more celebrated than in Mexico.

Some feel Cinco de Mayo is also important to American history. France is one of many European nations that openly sided with the Union while secretly maintaining trade with the Confederacy. Many historians believe that the French army would have supported the Confederacy in more open ways had the Mexican army not slowed them down in Puebla. According to these historians, Cinco de Mayo is more important to American history than most people realize.

Cinco de Mayo is possibly the biggest American celebration of Mexican culture. A day where Americans appreciate Mexican culture more than any other. It makes perfect sense to hold an event like Taco’bout Marshall that weekend.
