Written from press release

CLAY COUNTY, Ind. — May 5, 2025

A 47-year-old man from Poland, Indiana, has been arrested following an investigation into an officer-involved shooting that occurred last month in Clay County, according to the Indiana State Police.

Dale L. Evans was taken into custody Monday afternoon by Trooper Kyle Hall after being released from a hospital where he had been recovering from gunshot wounds sustained during the April 15 incident. Evans is being held at the Clay County Jail on bond and faces multiple felony charges.

Evans has been charged with:

  • Battery on a Public Official (Level 5 Felony)
  • Intimidation with a Deadly Weapon (Level 5 Felony)
  • Auto Theft (Level 5 Felony)
  • Criminal Recklessness with a Deadly Weapon (Level 6 Felony)
  • Resisting Law Enforcement with a Vehicle (Level 6 Felony)
  • Criminal Mischief (Level 6 Felony)

According to state police, the incident began when off-duty Knightsville Town Marshal Michael Heaton reported spotting a stolen U-Haul at a fueling station near State Roads 59 and 42. Officers attempted a traffic stop, but the driver fled, eventually turning onto a private drive.

What followed was a prolonged and chaotic standoff. Evans allegedly rammed three Clay County patrol vehicles and nearly struck a deputy. Negotiations lasted for approximately 90 minutes, during which time the suspect reportedly drove the U-Haul directly into a marked Indiana State Police vehicle, injuring a trooper.

At that point, officers from the Terre Haute Police Department and the Clay County Sheriff’s Department opened fire, striking Evans. He was airlifted to a hospital in Indianapolis. A female passenger in the vehicle fled on foot and was later released following questioning.

The injured state trooper was treated at a Terre Haute hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

All officers involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave, per standard protocol, and the case remains under investigation by multiple Indiana State Police detectives.

Assisting agencies included the Terre Haute Police Department Special Response Team, Indiana Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officers, Posey Volunteer Fire Department, and Lifeline Air Ambulance.

All suspects are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
