BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — May 5, 2025
A 38-year-old Bloomington man was taken to a hospital for emergency surgery late Sunday night after being stabbed outside The Office Lounge bar on the city’s east side, according to police.
At approximately 11:31 p.m. on May 4, Bloomington Police officers responded to a report of a stabbing at the bar, located at 3900 E Third Street. Witnesses told arriving officers that the suspect was still at the scene, sitting in the passenger seat of a maroon Ford Expedition in the parking lot.
Multiple bystanders pointed out the man, who was taken into custody without incident. He was identified as 49-year-old Danny J. Mathis of Solsberry.
Police recovered a knife believed to have been used in the stabbing near the vehicle.
Mathis reportedly told officers he had been playing pool with people he didn’t know and that the altercation began when the victim grabbed his shoulder after Mathis made a comment to a woman who was with the victim.
However, several witnesses stated to police they did not observe any argument or physical altercation. Instead, they saw Mathis walking away from the victim and initially believed he had punched the man. Moments later, the victim began to complain that he had been stabbed in the abdomen.
Officers rendered emergency medical aid until an ambulance arrived. The victim was taken to a local hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery.
Mathis was transported to the Monroe County Jail and booked on a preliminary charge of battery with a deadly weapon, a Level 5 felony.
