Mayor LaToya Cantrell was joined by NORD Commission CEO Larry Barabino Jr., Councilman Freddie King and the Rainey family to unveil the George V. Rainey Natatorium at the Morris F.X. Jeff Sr. Recreation Complex.
A natatorium is a complex that houses one or more swimming pools used for aquatic activities and sports.
The $8.5 million, 10,53square-foot facility was made possible through Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and City bond dollars.
“This modern, inclusive facility transforms a seasonal space into a year-round hub for wellness, youth engagement, and community health. With sustainable features and ADA accessibility, we’re building smarter and stronger,” said Cantrell.
The facility is named after Army vet, businessman, longtime member of Zulu Social Aid and Pleasure Club, 2019 Zulu King, founder of Zulu Lundi Gras Fest and Algiers native, George V. Rainey.
“Naming it after George V. Rainey honors a legacy of service that will inspire generations to come, and this is just the beginning,” said Cantrell.
The complex features an indoor lap and recreation pool, outdoor splash pad, ADA-accessible locker rooms, a climate-controlled design, and integrated stormwater management infrastructure.
“This natatorium is a space where families, youth, and seniors can stay active, learn to swim, and connect with their neighbors,” said Barabino.
King added that the grand opening marks a major investment in Algiers and in the health and well-being of residents.
