Avoyelles Parish residents alerted to heavy rain, flash floods

AVOYELLES PARISH, La. (WNTZ) — Local officials are urging residents to exercise caution as the National Weather Service has placed Avoyelles Parish under a Flood Watch through Thursday, with a significant chance of heavy rainfall and potential flash flooding.

According to the latest forecast, there is a 55% probability that the region could receive four inches or more of rain, increasing the likelihood of flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas.

Sheriff David L. Dauzat and the Executive Director of the Avoyelles Parish 911 Communications Center issued a joint reminder to avoid driving through flooded roadways.

“It only takes a small amount of water to sweep away a vehicle,” officials said. “Turn around, don’t drown.”

Residents are encouraged to report hazardous conditions or request assistance by calling the Avoyelles 911 Communications Center.
