Video released of police shooting at Safeway in Morgan Hill

(KRON) — Newly released police body camera video shows the events leading up to officers shooting a man inside a Safeway in Morgan Hill last month.

Morgan Hill Police Department officers responded shortly after midnight on April 18 to a report of a disturbance inside the East Dunne Avenue grocery store. An employee told police that a man was walking around with a kitchen knife in one hand and a bottle of wine in the other. The first arriving officer located Shaun Hillman, 40, of Van Nuys, near the cash registers holding the 8-inch knife, body camera video shows.

The officer commanded Hillman to drop the knife before Hillman ran down an aisle toward the back of the store. There, store video surveillance captured Hillman charging at an employee and striking them with a wine bottle.

Multiple officers approach the back of the store and find the employee on the floor of a hallway. Hillman is located nearby and more commands are given by the officers to drop the knife with the threat of being tased.

“When Hillman did not comply, a Taser was deployed, but it was ineffective and he ran toward the front of the store,” Morgan Hill PD wrote.

Hillman is seen on video hurling wine bottles at officers before one officer fires his service weapon at the suspect. Police said Hillman was not struck by the gunfire.

Hillman, who police said still carried a wine bottle, was again confronted by an officer. “There’s deputies everywhere, man, just get down on your knees,” the officer is heard saying on bodycam. “Just get down. It’s over.”

After picking up a store display, Hillman charged toward an officer who fired his service weapon. Hillman is struck in the leg and is seen on video having difficulty regaining his footing to stand.

Hillman is arrested and transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The Safeway employee who was attacked was hospitalized for a head injury, police said. No responding officers were injured in the incident.

Hillman was charged with assault with a deadly weapon, assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer and resisting a police officer. The Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office is investigating the police shooting as standard procedure.
