Goodwill’s first Silicon Valley outlet store opens Friday

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KRON) — In a sign of the times, a secondhand store is opening in one of the most expensive places to live in the county. The new Goodwill Outlet store opens Friday in San Jose on the corner of Tully and South King roads.

At a time when so many families are struggling with the cost of living, the new San Jose location will sell most of its items in bulk. Customers will be charged by the pound.

The nonprofit business, known for low-priced clothing, housewares, furniture and electronics, described the shopping experience as a treasure hunt. Large bins will be filled with deep discounts.

San Jose tops the list as the No. 1 most expensive city in the United States to live in, according to Forbes. The average cost of living in SJ is $3,600 a month on living expenses. That’s nearly 75 percent above the national average.

The grand opening of the San Jose outlet store comes at a time when Goodwill is shutting down 11 locations in the San Francisco Bay Area, along with its San Francisco headquarters.

A ribbon cutting ceremony is set for 10 a.m. on Friday with local leaders expected in attendance.
