‘Weak-minded person’: Suspect accused of Fresno barbershop homicide appears in court

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – The man accused of the April 19 barber shop shooting made his first appearance in court Wednesday.

Kobe Chantharangsy appeared before a judge on Wednesday for the Los Viejones Barbershop shooting that injured two and left an innocent bystander, 44-year-old Jampier Quintero, dead.

Also present in court was Adrian Echeverria, whom investigators said drove the getaway car from the scene.

Both Chantharangsy and Echeverria pleaded not guilty.

Chantharangsy is being charged with murder, attempted murder and multiple other charges.  Echeverria is being charged as an accessory in the crime.

Chantharangsy’s aunt was in court as well to show her support for the victim’s family.

“I’m here not to support Kobe,” she said. “But I just want him to see me.”

She did not want to be identified but said she feared this day would come.

“When the news came out yesterday, I dreamt of him. When I woke up, I wanted to text him, but I just couldn’t find his last contact,” she said. “And my friend and cousin texted me and said, ‘Do you see the news?’ My heart dropped.”

She said the 18-year-old accused killer had a rough life; his parents left when he was just six months old, he was always in trouble, getting kicked out of school and getting mixed up with the wrong crowd.

“My nephew is a weak-minded person and he needs a lot of help,” she said. “He’s in and out of jail a lot of times. And I feel like the system doesn’t really help him.”

She tried many times to help him, but never had any luck.

“We’re always going to be there for him, but he doesn’t want the help,” she said. “You cannot help a person if they don’t want your help.”

But, no matter what her nephew went through, his aunt said there is no excuse for the actions he took on April 19 that took the life of Jampier Quintero at the Los Viejones Barbershop

“I’m not sad for my nephew,” she said. “I’m sad for the victim’s family. You know, two kids have to grow up without a dad.”
