On Tuesday afternoon, the Fresno Police Department revealed 18-year-old Kobe Chantharangsy as the suspect in the barbershop shooting that took the life of Quintero on April 20.
Detectives say Chantharangsy was getting a haircut on April 19. He was wearing a haircut drape when a couple of rival gang members came into the barbershop and started challenging each other verbally. Chantharangsy produced a firearm from underneath the drape and started shooting at the rivals.
Per the officers, as the rivals were running from the barbershop, he continued to shoot. He shot four rounds, hitting a 17-year-old, a 20-year-old and Quintero. The 17-year-old and the 20-year-old were found near the scene and have since been released from the hospital.
Quintero, however, died a day later on Easter, after suffering from a gunshot wound in the abdomen.
YourCentralValley.com spoke to Quintero’s family. Upon hearing the news, Quintero’s wife, Gabriela Lopez, says she cried and felt relieved because the family was afraid of the suspect and the possibility of retaliation from him.
Lopez says she wanted to see the suspect’s face. When she did, she says his face “represented evil.”
“He’s a danger to humanity, completely,” she said. “His face represents evil. A very bad evil.”
Lopez also says she’s thankful to Fresno Police for the arrest of the man accused of taking her husband’s life.
Quintero and his family came from Caracas, Venezuela. They moved to the United States, running away from one of the most dangerous cities in the world.
When Quintero and his family came, his family says he worked hard to contribute to their community up until the day he was killed.
“My youngest son is always asking for his dad… he asks, ‘Where is my dad?’ and I said ‘Dad is in heaven,’ and he says ‘I want to see my dad. I’m crying, mommy. I want to see my dad,'” she said. “He’s just five. He left my children without their dad. It’s not fair.”
The Fresno Police report they were able to identify Chantharangsy as the suspect after connecting him with another shooting that hospitalized a man with three gunshot wounds on April 18.
On April 26, Chantharangsy was arrested by plainclothes detectives and booked under suspicion of murder, among other offenses related to the shootings.
Investigators say they identified Adrian Echeverria as an accessory in the crime. He was charged on suspicion as an accessory.
Lopez says she wants people to remember his husband as the “living example of the migrant who loves the United States.” She says she wants others to remember him and take him as an example for others to be compassionate towards others.
“That is what he transmitted. Love,” she said.
His family says Quintero’s body will be cremated in the United States and his ashes will later be taken to Venezuela when the time comes. To support the family during this time, click here.
