SHREVEPORT, LA (KTAL/KMSS) — LSU Health Sciences Center of Shreveport is under fire after multiple rule violations caused the death of numerous lab animals.
Michael Budkie, Executive Director of SAEN (Stop Animal Exploitation NOW!), released a statement addressed to LSU Health Shreveport Interim Chancellor Lester Johnson and LSU System Chief Research Officer David Guzick, calling for multiple firings, blaming lab staff incompetence for the deaths of 19 research animals.

ACUC (Animal Care and Use Committee), a group responsible for overseeing animal care in lab settings, suspended LSU Health Shreveport’s testing protocol by vote in a special session on March 6, 2024. On May 23, 2024, LSU Health Sciences Center released a non-compliance report that corroborated the ACUC findings.
Reasons for the suspension included an unsecured controlled substances cabinet, unauthorized personnel participating in research activities, children in the workplace, a non-research animal in the building, and various study participants not wearing proper personal protective equipment (PPE).
The violations are believed to be the reason for a failed C-section that resulted in the deaths of all 19 pigs involved.
Executive Director Budkie is adamant that the types of violations found in this procedure are so apparent that they can not be corrected by training, stating that the Principal Investigator of the project, Research Administrators, current research administration, and all research staff connected to the failed project should all be fired.
Budkie continues, “LSU Health Sciences Center in Shreveport should permanently eliminate the performance of large animal research.” Chancellor Johnson and Chief Research Officer David Guzick have not yet responded to requests for comment.
