Paul Howard Kauffman, 63, faces one charge of aggravated assault with serious injury (second-degree felony).
On March 15, Kauffman got into a “short verbal argument” with the alleged victim while on a ski slope at Deer Valley Ski Resort, according to a statement of probable cause.
Just after the argument, Kauffman reportedly tackled the man, who still had his skis on. When the victim fell, according to the statement, he “felt a pop” in his knee when he hit the snow with Kauffman on top of him.
The victim suffered a “multidirectional tear of the medial meniscus, an ACL tear, a partial tear of the fibular collateral ligament, a grade 2 chondral fissuring of the patella median ridge, and a minimally impacted fracture involving the posterior portion of the lateral tibial plateau,” the statement reads.
Kauffman is summoned to appear on May 30 in the Third District Court.
