Central School Board Seeks voter approval for $35 million bond to improve school infrastructure

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) —The Central School Board is urging voters to support a $35 million bond proposal on the upcoming May 3rd ballot—a decision that could shape the future of the district’s educational facilities for years to come.

Central Community School System Superintendent Jason Fountain says the bond is about building a brighter future for the district.

“I’ve always said that I want to make this community proud of our school system. A yes vote sets us up to do that,” Fountain said.

If approved, the 20-year bond would fund critical construction and facility upgrades across the district, including a new Pre-K building at Bellingrath Hills Elementary and a fine arts wing at Central High School.

“These are things that are important for us to continue to grow our program and give our students the very best offerings that are possible,” Fountain said.

Although Central operates as an independent school district, the bond proposition will appear on ballots under East Baton Rouge Parish. Residents who live within the Central school system boundaries will be eligible to vote.

Fountain also emphasized that the proposal is not a new tax.

“Any item that shows Central Community School System—this is about a renewal. This is not a new tax. This is a renewal that was first voter-approved in 2009,” he said.

Election Day is Saturday, May 3rd.
