According to the Jefferson Parish District Attorney’s Office, 47-year-old Saleh “Sam” Omar had been hostile toward Mezlini in the weeks leading up to the incident, planning a confrontation that involved tying the victim up.
On Sept. 8, 2018, at a vacant suite adjacent to Omar’s cell phone repair shop in the 90 block of Terry Parkway, Mezlini was attacked by Omar, bound with duct tape, and left in the suite with his mouth and nose covered by duct tape, unable to breathe.
Mezlini was found later by employees of the phone repair shop. Chest compressions were attempted but Mezlini had suffered irreversible brain damage from the lack of oxygen, and so was pronounced dead on the following day.
Omar was arrested two weeks later after being found in Panama. He was taken back to Jefferson Parish and charged with second-degree murder, although the over the course of the jury’s deliberations, he was eventually convicted of manslaughter instead.
Omar’s sentencing is scheduled for May 14.
