Alabama’s first dog dies, Governor Ivey says

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WKRG) — Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey announced on Friday that her beloved pup and First Dog, Missy, has died. She was around 10 years old.

According to a news release from Ivey’s office, she adopted Missy in January 2019 from the Montgomery Humane Shelter.

The release said the governor and Missy were proverbially connected at the hip from the time Missy was adopted until she passed away.

“Whether the governor was working in her office at the Governor’s Mansion, hosting gatherings in the back courtyard, enjoying a meal, or even taking her pontoon boat out on the lake, Missy was always right by the governor’s side,” read the release.

Ivey described Missy as a “great friend” and said she made the Governor’s Mansion “feel like home.”

“I will miss her dearly,” said Governor Ivey. “Missy lived a great life. There is nothing quite like the love from our pets.”
