Person questioned in connection to West Side garage fire that killed CFD Captain David Meyer

CHICAGO — Chicago police are questioning a person of interest in connection to the fire that killed a Chicago fire captain Wednesday morning.

A criminal investigation is underway in the death of 54-year-old David Meyer, who was nearing retirement.

Black bunting hangs over the enterence of the West Side fire house where Captain Meyer spent most of his nearly 30-year career.

The garage fire broke out around 4 a.m. Wednesday in the 5500 block of West Crystal in the Austin neighborhood.

Officials said the fire had been extinguished when the garage collapsed and injured Meyer.

“The fire was put out and the companies were outside the garage starting salvage and overhaul when the garage collapsed injuring Captain Meyer,” CFD Commissioner Annette Nance-Holt said

A Mayday call went out and firefighters were able to get to him quickly, and rush him to Stroger Hosptial were he later died.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but there is evidence that suggests it was intinally set.

Witnesses say the fire started in the alley, possibly in trash cans, then spread to the garage.

CPD said a person is being questioned in this case. No charges have been filed.

According to CFD, Meyer joined the department in 1996. His last assignment was Truck 29 and he leaves behind his wife, daughters and a son.
