New Town hosts spring clean-up event in Marshall, Texas

MARSHALL, Texas (KTAL/KMSS) — The New Town Neighborhood Association is hosting a Spring Clean-Up event on Saturday, May 3 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Participants should meet at Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church, 1300 Billus Street, Marshall, TX, between 8:00 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. The association will provide gloves, reachers, bags, safety vests, and street assignments. Lunch will be provided, and Republic Services will collect the trash bags afterwards.

New Town is a predominantly black neighborhood in southwest Marshall, TX. The neighborhood developed around the first accredited historically black college west of the Mississippi River, Wiley College (later Wiley University). The neighborhood contained its own hospital, schools, funeral homes, and medical offices. The New Town Neighborhood Association regularly hosts community clean-ups.
