JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – Jackson residents voted for change in Tuesday’s Municipal Primary Runoff Election. The focus is now shifting to the General Election in June.

Nearly 25,000 people voted in Jackson’s mayoral runoff. The majority of them, who voted in the Democratic primary, chose State Senator John Horn (D-District 26) over incumbent Mayor Chokwe A. Lumumba.

“I’m very confident that Mr. Horhn will stand behind everything that he has represented so far, and I look forward to watching him progress as a leader,” said Kathy Smith, a Jackson voter.

Councilman Brian Grizzell, Ward 4, said he’s ready to work with the next mayor. He wants action on roads and abandoned buildings.

“We’re going to embrace them, and we’re going to really look forward to working with them to make sure that our priorities, again, are well communicated and that we see that our projects get done,” Grizzell said.

Councilman Vernon Hartley, Ward 5, said voters want a clear vision from City Hall. He said he will work with the next mayor, plan or no plan.

“But it’s so much easier when we know what direction we’re actually going. Give us a plan, so we can support any administration with the money and the laws from the legislative branch,” Hartley stated.

Jackson voters will return to the polls on June 3, 2025. They will choose between Democrat John Horhn, Republican Kenney Gee and Independent candidates Rodney DePriest, Zach Service, Lille Stewart-Robinson and Kim Wade.
