The fatal crash involving at least two other vehicles occurred around 9:23 p.m. on the eastbound Highway 4 to northbound Highway 160 connector, according to the California Highway Patrol incident log.
Contra Costa County deputies were in pursuit of a suspect on Highway 160 before the chase was terminated, the sheriff’s office said. Authorities stated that the decision to end the pursuit was made after the suspect crossed the center divider and began driving in the opposite direction.
“A short time after the pursuit was terminated and the deputies no longer had sight of the suspect vehicle, the collision occurred,” the sheriff’s office said.
Further details on the fatal crash and the circumstances that led to the pursuit were not immediately available.
The connector was shut down overnight for investigation and cleanup before reopening at 6:24 a.m. Wednesday.
The Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office is involved in the investigation.
