CHICAGO — A firefighter is in critical condition following a garage fire on the city’s West Side.

The blaze started around 4 a.m. Wednesday in the 5500 block of West Crystal in the Austin neighborhood. The roof of the garage has collapsed.

Residents say the fire started in the alley, possibly trash cans, then spread to the garage.

The detached garage belongs to two apartments and residents made it out safely.
