The Office of District Attorney Paul Connick Jr. reported that 52-year-old Monica Every and 37-year-old Louis Gordon were found guilty of conspiring to kill Charlene Jones in January 2022.
On Jan. 27, 2022, court documents state Jones was fatally shot by Gordon while sitting in her car outside an apartment complex near Causeway Boulevard.
The district attorney’s office reported that Every’s boyfriend left her to be with Jones on Christmas Day 2021, leading to a “harassment campaign,” involving phone calls, having Gordon put voodoo dust on Jones’ car and having Gordon plant a gun in Jones’ car.
Every reportedly made an anonymous tip to Crimestoppers stating the gun Gordon planted in Jones’ car was linked to a New Orleans homicide.
The district attorney’s office reported that Every also anonymously faxed court records about her ex-boyfriend’s 1997 guilty plea in a manslaughter case to Jones’ apartment complex management.
Court documents state Every’s ex-boyfriend found Jones shot to death in her car on Jan. 27, 2022. Deputies said bullet casings were found near the car.
Surveillance video reportedly showed the shooter passing the guardhouse and speeding out of the apartment complex about five minutes later.
Investigators said the car was found to be owned by Gordon’s girlfriend, who was initially viewed as a suspect. According to the district attorney’s office, Gordon’s girlfriend “allowed Gordon to use her car and one of her daughters’ cell phones on the morning Jones was murdered.”
Investigators said she was unaware of the murder scheme and pleaded guilty to money laundering in relation to handling some of the money Gordon received from Every.
Gordon was arrested in Florida in connection with the case.
The district attorney’s office reported Every paid Gordon $10,000 for the fatal shooting.
Court documents state Every and Gordon were connected to the plot through phone and financial records, which included a message from Gordon to Every saying “$$$” minutes after the shooting.
Investigators said Every met detectives at a New Orleans coffee shop to discuss the case, where she gave an alibi and recorded the conversation.
On Thursday, Every was found guilty of principal to second-degree murder, conspiracy to commit second-degree murder and solicitation for second-degree murder.
Gordon was found guilty of second-degree murder, conspiracy to commit second-degree murder, convicted felon in possession of a firearm and obstruction of justice.
Every and Gordon are set to be sentenced on May 29.
