Metairie man found guilty of murder by ‘brutal’ beating

JEFFERSON PARISH, La. (WGNO) — A Metairie man was found guilty of murder on Wednesday night after he reportedly “brutally” beat a man to death back in May of 2024.

According to the Office of District Attorney Paul Connick Jr., 62-year-old Winston Bartholomew suspected 62-year-old Gary Olver of spreading salacious rumors about his girlfriend.

On May 14, 2024, Bartholomew and his girlfriend were reportedly driving past Olver’s home, a second-floor apartment above a tavern, located in the 2700 block of Mississippi Street, and decided to stop and speak to him.

Inside, investigators say Olver allegedly brushed against the woman, prompting Bartholomew to begin attacking him. A nearby resident reported hearing the incident along with a woman yelling “stop it, stop it. You’re going to kill him.”

By the time the beating had ended, the woman had reportedly left the apartment. Bartholomew then went downstairs to the tavern and ordered a beer.

In the end, Olver suffered a fatal brain injury, multiple broken ribs on both sides of his body and a laceration to the back of his head. He died two weeks later on May 28, after his family took him off of life support. Bartholomew was arrested on May 31 after being identified as the suspect.

After less than two hours of deliberation by a jury, Bartholomew was found guilty as charged for second-degree murder and obstruction of justice, a charge which he received after admitting to destroying his cell phone as to not be tracked by detectives. His sentencing is scheduled for April 9.
