Louisiana Education Department unveils hub for military families

BATON ROUGE, La. (WNTZ) — In honor of April’s designation as the Month of the Military Child, the Louisiana Department of Education (LDOE) has unveiled a new online resource hub aimed at supporting military families as they navigate the state’s public education system.

Developed in partnership with Barksdale Air Force Base, the new website section offers centralized access to key information and tools designed to ease school transitions for Louisiana’s more than 12,000 military-connected students.

“This new online resource reflects our commitment to ensuring every child—especially those whose families serve our country—has access to a high-quality education and a smooth school experience in Louisiana,” said State Superintendent of Education Dr. Cade Brumley. “We’re proud to partner with Barksdale to strengthen our outreach and service to military families.”

The resource hub includes guidance on advance school enrollment, links to school directories, information about graduation requirements, and details about special education services. It also highlights Louisiana’s Purple Star Schools—a designation awarded to schools that go above and beyond to support students from military families.

Barksdale Air Force Base Installation Commander Col. Michael Maginness praised the initiative, calling it a vital step forward in addressing the unique challenges military families face.

“Our military families deserve our unwavering support in accessing high-quality, affordable, and special needs accommodating educational resources,” Maginness said. “Their strength is our inspiration, and their education is our shared responsibility.”

The site also provides information on the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children, a national agreement designed to reduce educational disruptions for military families who move between states.

With over 1,300 public schools across 124 school systems in Louisiana serving military-connected students, the LDOE said the resource hub underscores its ongoing commitment to supporting students at every stage of their academic journey.

The military family resource hub is now live and accessible at doe.louisiana.gov, with regular updates and new tools planned for continued support.
