LSUA, Fort Polk partner to enhance education for soldiers’ families

FORT POLK, La. (WNTZ) — Louisiana State University of Alexandria (LSUA) has formalized a new partnership with the United States Army Garrison at Fort Polk, signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) aimed at expanding access to affordable, high-quality education for service members, their families, retirees, and the broader Fort Polk community.

The agreement, announced jointly by LSUA and Fort Polk officials, establishes a direct educational presence on the installation, with plans to offer college courses during off-duty hours. Classes will prioritize active-duty military and their dependents, while also accommodating additional community members as space permits.

“This is another opportunity for our Soldiers to get an education,” said Brig. Gen. Jason Curl, Commander of the Joint Readiness Training Center (JRTC) and Fort Polk. “For both Soldiers and family members, it’s a great opportunity. The more opportunities, the better.”

Under the agreement, Fort Polk’s Education Services Office (ESO) will coordinate closely with LSUA staff to facilitate access to Army tuition assistance and provide administrative space for LSUA faculty, advisors, and classroom instruction directly on base.

LSUA Chancellor Dr. Paul Coreil described the collaboration as both strategic and meaningful. “Our mission is to educate the region, enhancing workforce development for our communities,” Coreil said. “However, partnering with Fort Polk holds a deeper meaning due to our profound respect for military service. LSUA is dedicated to supporting soldiers and their families by ensuring they have exceptional educational opportunities that honor their sacrifices.”

Col. Adam Barlow, Garrison Commander at Fort Polk, said the presence of LSUA on base will provide more than convenience—it will support long-term career advancement.

“Having LSUA classes at Fort Polk ensures that our soldiers and families can access quality education without leaving the installation,” Barlow said. “This partnership makes Fort Polk an even more attractive and resource-rich environment, providing valuable educational experiences that directly support promotions, career advancement, and future employment opportunities. It’s truly a win-win.”

The initiative reflects LSUA’s ongoing commitment to serving Central Louisiana through academic outreach and workforce development, particularly in support of those who serve in uniform.
