CHP received notice of a solo car collision at around 3:05 a.m. on Sunday. According to CHP, a BMW sedan was blocking the first lane on Highway 101, north of the Paul Avenue off-ramp. While CHP was en route, a Honda sedan crashed into the BMW.
The BMW, according to CHP, began to catch fire before the second collision.
Fire crews responded and extricated the driver from the BMW. The driver was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead at around 3:39 a.m.
CHP said the driver of the Honda was cooperative. Alcohol or drugs are not considered to be involved in the second collision, said CHP.
All roads are open as of 5:20 a.m.
