The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office posted on Facebook that around 11:39 a.m. on Friday, deputies were dispatched to Jonesville Cemetery Road in response to reports of a suspicious vehicle there.
The sheriff’s office wrote that deputies had received several complaints about the same vehicle being driven recklessly in the same area.
When deputies went to talk to the driver, later identified as Zachary Smith, 39, of Monticello, they said he smelled like alcohol and had slurred speech. Smith reportedly failed all field sobriety tests, at which point he was arrested.
Smith was reportedly charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol-second offense – aggravating circumstances, blocking a travel portion of a highway, and possession of a prohibited open alcoholic beverage container in a motor vehicle.
He was taken to the Wayne County Detention Center, where deputies said his breath was tested, showing a BAC of 0.351. He was then reportedly taken to the Wayne County Hospital to be cleared by medical staff due to how high his BAC level was, before he was returned to jail.
The suspicious vehicle investigation remains ongoing.
