Timothy Johnson, 39 of Chicago, faces one felony count of robbery and three misdemeanor counts of resisting an officer.
The robbery happened at around 9 p.m. Friday on a Blue Line train located in the 100 block of West Lake in downtown Chicago.
The custom-made violin was inside a black storage case and is valued at $10,000, according to investigators.
According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the case was recovered but there is no word on the instrument itself. The owner hopes Johnson is willing to provide information on its whereabouts.
Police said Johnson was arrested Wednesday in the 100 block of West Ida B. Wells Drive after being identified as the offender who stole the violen from a 22-year-old man while on a train.
Johnson is expected in court on Thursday.
