BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — The family of Kyle Earthly Jr., the 18-year-old who was fatally shot just days before Christmas, is speaking out about the deep emotional toll his death has taken as they prepare for a key court hearing next week.
“K.J. was viciously murdered two days before Christmas,” said Marie Williams, Earlthy’s aunt. “It’s had a negative impact on how we view life. Our holiday will never be the same.”
Authorities have charged 18-year-old Jeremiah Howze with Earthly’s murder. He was taken back into custody Tuesday after violating conditions of his house arrest, including failing to keep his ankle monitor charged. East Baton Rouge District Attorney Hillar Moore confirmed that the original monitoring company has been replaced, and Howze will remain in custody until his hearing next week.
Earlthy’s family said his death has left a void that cannot be filled.
“What I miss the most about K.J. is his smile, his energy,” said his cousin Kyla Robinson. “Every time he walked into a room, he lit it up. Everybody was happy to see him. He just had so much love for himself. And I’m just hoping that on Monday, justice is served.”
The family believes the crime was driven by jealousy and hate.
“For somebody to do that to him — that shows hate and jealousy,” his sister said.
Earlthy’s cousin echoed the need for accountability, not only in the courtroom but also within the community.
“Hopefully the progress we’re making with K.J.’s case sends a message loud and clear,” His aunt said. “You need to think before you act. Emotional decisions are never okay at the sake of someone else’s life.”
His cousin Jasmine Williams also urged families to raise their children with accountability and awareness.
“Hold your child to a high standard so they understand that one simple action can have a lifelong impact. And that’s what we’re seeing now,” said Williams.
The family said they will be in court Monday for Howze’s hearing, continuing their push for justice.
“We’ll never stop chanting Justice for K.J.,” said Williams.
