According to police, the shooting happened just before 7:30 a.m. Tuesday near the intersection of West 79th Street and South Carpenter Street in Auburn Gresham. It was also caught on surveillance video.
The video shows an 18-year-old man standing at the intersection when an unknown vehicle with at least one unknown suspect started shooting in his direction. The teen suffered a graze wound to one of his legs and WGN-TV has learned the teen was waiting for a school bus.
Area neighbors said they woke up and found bullet holes in a nearby home and multiple cars parked on the street.
“I didn’t know what happened to my car. I was definitely shocked,” neighbor Jonathan Hannah said. “‘Your front window has been shot.’ I’m like, what? Front window, you can see two bullets and my front tire.”
The teen was taken to Little Company of Mary where he is listed in good condition. Efforts to reach the victim’s family have been unsuccessful.
Meanwhile, neighbors are now left to deal with the aftermath of the shooting and damage to their property. While they are relieved the teen was not seriously injured, they want police to go after the person(s) responsible.
“This block used to be peaceful,” Hannah said. “I hope they find the perp.”
No arrests have been made and Area Two Detectives are investigating.
