IMPD: Man, numerous homes struck by gunfire on west side of Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS — One person and multiple houses were struck by gunfire on the west side of Indianapolis Saturday night.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, officers were called to the 3500 block of Eisenhower Drive around 7:23 p.m. to investigate a shooting. When police arrived at the scene, they located an adult male with injuries consistent with gunshot wounds. IMPD reported that the man is currently in stable condition.

Detectives believe the man was injured when a group of subjects fired shots into one of the homes on Eisenhower Drive. IMPD confirmed several other homes were hit by gunfire during the shooting. Only one person was actually shot, despite the number of homes that were struck by gunfire.

Multiple FOX59/CBS4 crews responded to the scene. One crew located numerous evidence markers and a large area roped off by crime scene tape in the 3500 block of Eisenhower Drive.

Another crew spotted IMPD officers placing a person in handcuffs at the intersection of 34th Street and Moller Road. At the scene where the person was handcuffed, a white Toyota pickup truck was stopped in the middle of the roadway.

Multiple public police reports filed on the shooting indicate officers recovered live rounds of ammunition, a black 9MM Springfield Hellcat pistol, a Ruger pistol and a BB gun during their investigation. Law enforcement also reported that a yellow pickup truck was damaged during the shooting.

Additionally, officers used cotton swabs to collect potential DNA samples from the scene.

IMPD confirmed that a person of interest was detained during its investigation of the shooting on Saturday. On Monday, however, IMPD reported that it had not made any arrests directly related to the shooting.

A public police report filed on the incident, however, indicates that IMPD arrested one person during its investigation of the shooting. The report shows that the arrestee is 28-year-old Luis Aguilar.

An IMPD spokesperson told FOX59/CBS4 that Aguilar was arrested near the scene of the shooting on a separate warrant. It is unclear if Aguilar was involved in the shooting in any significant way.

It is also unknown if Aguilar was the person FOX59/CBS4 crews saw police place in handcuffs near 34th Street and Moller Road.

Marion County Jail logs indicate Aguilar was booked into jail on Sunday. A case number attached to his jail profile indicates Aguilar has had previous run-ins with law enforcement.

An affidavit for probable cause indicates Aguilar was involved in a foot chase with police in 2016. During that same incident, Aguilar reportedly threatened a police officer and was involved in a larger fight at a business on Lafayette Road in Indianapolis.

Indiana’s public court reporting system shows that Aguilar committed numerous pre-trial violations before his 2016 case was tried in court. Court records also indicate Aguilar violated terms of his Marion County Community Corrections sentence after his 2016 case was adjudicated.

The charges attached to Aguilar’s 2016 case are:

  • Battery against a public safety official — Level 6 Felony
  • Two counts of intimidation — Level 6 Felonies
  • Resisting law enforcement — Class A Misdemeanor
  • Battery resulting in bodily injury — Class A Misdemeanor
  • Criminal trespass — Class A Misdemeanor
  • Disorderly conduct — Class A Misdemeanor

It is unclear if the warrant IMPD arrested Aguilar on over the weekend is related to his 2016 case or any of the MCCC sentence violations he allegedly committed. Indiana’s public court reporting system indicates Aguilar’s attorneys appeared in court on his behalf on Monday.

Marion County Jail logs also note that a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) hold has been attached to Aguilar’s detainment records. Aguilar’s jail profile indicates he is from Mexico.

Aguilar is due in court for another violation hearing on Wednesday.
