According to the McHenry County Sheriff’s office, the incident began after deputies were called to the scene of a domestic dispute at a home in the 300 block of Briarwood Road in unincorporated Crystal Lake just before 4:30 p.m.
After deputies arrived on the scene, they encountered a man who was allegedly armed with a gun. The suspect then proceeded to barricade himself inside the home, authorities said.
Deputies called in the help of the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team and Hostage Negotiation Team, but efforts to get the suspect out of the home proved unsuccessful and authorities said a shooting involving deputies eventually occurred, though it is unclear if the suspect opened fire on the deputies.
Amid the gunfire, the suspect was struck and later pronounced dead.
The suspect was later identified by the McHenry County Coronoer’s Office as 46-year-old Darrick Lawrence, a Crystal Lake resident.
Currently, it is unclear what led to the incident and an autopsy is scheduled to take place Friday.
Deputies said the investigation into the deadly shooting has been turned over to the Major Investigation Assistance Team (MIAT) in conjunction with the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office. The MIAT will now conduct interviews and gather evidence, including a review of body-worn camera footage.
