Chyron Names David Burke Its Designer Of The Year

Chyron announced David Burke as the winner of its Designer of the Year award. This award is given twice each year, concurrently with the NAB Show and with the IBC Show. The award recognizes top tier achievement in broadcast graphics design, encompassing creativity, attention to design detail, animation, data integration, and playout control design, all exhibiting expert level use of PRIME CG, Chyron’s live graphics system.

Burke, has been a graphics operator and designer in sports, news and entertainment for more than 25 years. His professional experience encompasses regional sports network graphics disks used by 21 different NHL, NBA and MLB teams, and dozens of packages for college sports, fight sports, studio shows, in-venue shows, and news and entertainment broadcasts. He draws on a wealth industry experience to leverage the full capabilities of Chyron PRIME CG.

Burke says: “I think of myself as an operator who designs, and functionality is my top priority. For the MSG project that I submitted with my entry for this award, I sought to create a few powerful scenes with options to build a wide variety of layouts. An operator can quickly add top and bottom notes, highlights, sponsors, headshots or logos to any scene. There are presets for various layouts of columns and rows, with plenty of tools to move text, adjust font sizes and styles.

This project takes full advantage of PRIME’s advanced data integration capabilities. The SportRadar API populates the rosters and standings via custom apps. When the operator selects a tricode, PRIME updates a drop-down menu with that team’s roster so they can quickly choose a player, or they can use hotkeys to pop him in by number. In-game stats are provided through SRDI and HITS, season stats and leaderboards through Playbook.”

“At Chyron, we are deeply committed to the success and empowerment of our growing, global community of Chyron PRIME CG freelancers and employees of design houses and broadcasters,” says Carol Bettencourt, Chyron vice president of marketing. “While we relentlessly pursue innovation that will help our customers tell better stories more efficiently and profitably, we recognize that everything we make is only as good as the professionals who use it. So, it’s really inspiring to see what our Designer of the Year winners do with PRIME and important to us to acknowledge their contributions.”

Burke concludes, “I’m grateful for the generous support I received from Chyron, particularly Justin Eastman who helped with the first core templates and Kris Gurrad with advanced troubleshooting. With their help, I hope I delivered a powerful, versatile, attractive graphics package worthy of the Designer of the Year award.”
