PATTERSON, La. (
KLFY) — A vigil was held in Patterson today for a pit bull named Olive that was found tied to a tree, filled with bullet holes and left for dead.
It was put together by Aviary Creature Rescue and Acadiana Humane Society to keep Olive’s name in the light and let the community know they will not forget about what happened to her as they continue looking for justice.
Alyssa Muse with Aviary Creature Rescue voiced the importance of the life of Olive.
“A life is a life,” she said. “Whether that’s a dog, a child, an adult, a bird, life is life. Anyone who doesn’t have that respect for it, it goes way beyond that.”
Olive was found on March 6 in a field after someone was walking in the area and noticed her. Seeing the condition she was in; it was best for them to euthanize her to end her suffering. Since then, Aviary Creature Rescue has pushed for justice in finding who is responsible.
Muse said they want to keep her name alive with the vigil and bring notice to other cases in the area.
“There are so many other animals around here that never get this exposure,” Muse said. “We’re trying to make her the face of the movement, and we still have not gotten very far. I know the sheriff’s office is working very hard on it. But there are some folks that know something, and we just want to encourage them to do the right thing.”
St. Mary Parish Sheriff Gary Driskell sent a statement regarding cases like Olive’s.
“These animal cruelty cases or crimes hit our hearts,” he said. “Our pets and our animals hold a special place in our lives. We are committed to bringing those who commit these terrible acts to justice. The public can help us by coming forward with information. If you know something, say something.
