The baby was born on March 30 to parents Violet (11) and Sefu (17). Violet originally came to the Hogle Zoo in 2017 due to a breeding recommendation with Sefu. This new baby marks their third offspring together.
“This birth is a meaningful step for conserving colobus monkeys, whose populations are declining due to habitat loss, poaching, and increasing conflict with humans,” Utah’s Hogle Zoo said in a press release.
The zoo said that colobus monkeys are born with white fur, which then changes to black-and-white as they mature. According to the zoo, colobus monkeys participate in alloparenting, meaning females in the troop share in the care of infants, which allows young females without babies to practice maternal care. However, mothers usually stay close by, especially responding to cries.
Typically, the zoo said, colobus monkeys live in central and eastern Africa, spending much of their lives in treetops.
You can find the colobus monkey troop, including the new baby, within the zoo’s Primate Forest.
